"What are the basics of Magick?
You may have heard of the basics many times in your studies of magick and mentors will often refer back to them, but what are they?
The basics are the building blocks of magick, you may wonder if they are as important as most experienced practitioners emphasise them to be and by writing this I may dampen the spirits of some who want to leap into the practice of magick without careful studying of the origins and traditions of magick but to clarify, in truth the basics are not absolutely necessary to perform magick, but the same cannot be said to practice magick. In other words, a simple spell can be cast by any inexperienced practitioner with varied results, but to practice the ancient traditions of ceremonial rituals the basics are of utmost importance.
To start with the basics we first must examine the word magick its definition and its origin, I have seen many times the word magick explained as the old way of writing the word magic, they are wrong, I have no idea where their source is from and you should probably stop reading or listening to their explanation of magick right about now. The work magick is a development in the modern English language, used be Aleister Crowley in the early nineteen hundreds to differentiate the magic you see in magic trick performances and magick in terms of the occult, he defines magick as "the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will" (Aleister Crowley). Aleister Crowley is the forefather of the modern occult, he founded the religion and philosophy of Thelema.
What is Magick?
There is many different traditions and path in magick that originate from ancient times which are almost nearly lost to us, most practitioners of magick study these traditions and paths, but that would mean there are many different understanding of magick. From a general look into it, it is the study and discipline of the mind, body and soul, you cannot however learn to control and bend the elements or fly and become invisible by casting spells, the laws of physics still apply to magick but not deeply rooted in it as our understanding of how these laws are not absolute. This means that with the extensive practice you may create small change and conformation of the physical world by reflecting yourself upon it and the the power of your subconscious mind melding with the conscious physical world.
So how do we do all this?
Energy Energy Energy. There is always energy around you and within you, use them. The power of magick is from harnessing the energy within you and using the energy you absorb from around you. I'm thinking of changing my earlier statement, the basics are the building blocks of magick to Energy is the building block of magick, in fact energy is magick.
Magick is practiced by using energy both natural and supernatural. In magick, to use your will to reflect on to the world by the use of energy that you have found from within and in more advanced studies the energies that you gathered from external forces to create small changes of the physical. Through this magick is the study and discipline of the mind, body and soul.
To find these energies within you and around you, meditation is a key method, and to also harness them.
Asides from techniques used, there are also many tools and accessories used practitioners to aid them in magick, the keyword here is aid, the magick is not within these tools but within the practitioner. They are important but they do not define magick and how it is to be practised.
Hopefully in more lessons to come, I will be able to explain the techniques to you in a concise manner and go through the tools that are commonly used in the practicing of magick.
